Alex Canion
Born and bred in Perth Western Australia, Alex started his musical journey at a young age always banging on pots, pans and anything that would sound like a drum (even his own body!). Alex’s musical interest was always directed towards the drums and it was in these early years that Alex developed his ear to comprehend different rhythms and beats.
“It wasn’t until I was in my mid teens, learning to play my bands poly- rhythmic riffs that I had a strange familiar feeling when playing them; like I had done it before. I then realised that with my obsessive compulsion towards drums as a child, I had actually drummed similar patterns, completely oblivious to what they were – they just felt right!”
In 2001 at age 12, hijacking his father’s bass in order to fill the gap in his school friend’s pop punk ,band, Alex was soon hooked by the power of music. Thus began his reputation as being one of the mainstays of the Perth metal scene.
Alex joined his first original band SERAPHIM at 15 which gained significant attention within the Perth Alt Rock scene. After releasing their debut single “Habit” to great reviews in 2005, SERAPHIM disbanded. 2005 also saw Alex Join melodic death metal band INTER ALIA. Alex’s tenure in INTER ALIA only lasted out the year and in 2006 he was asked to join Death/Doom band NOCTIS to which he is still in to this day on Bass and Lead vocals. By mid 2007 Alex was also playing in Death rock outfit PSYCHONAUT as well as NOCTIS.
Then, he was invited to join Australia’s premier melodic metal band VOYAGER. Soon after, Alex travelled with Voyager on tours to Sydney and Melbourne. To promote their album UNIVERS, VOYAGER then successfully completed a European tour to Germany, Denmark, The Netherlands and Switzerland.
Having been in at least two or more different bands at a time for most of his career, Alex attributes this to his hard work ethic and finds that the variety of different bands is one of the main catalysts for true musical happiness.
“I’ve always been in at least 2 bands at once; sometimes even three. I’ve made sure that they’re all very different stylistically. It’s very hard work committing time to each one but personally I’ve found that when you work on one band for a while, it builds up a healthy desire to express yourself in the vein of the other band. It keeps me balanced and happy as a musician and means I’m never sick of the music I’m playing in either band.”
With Alex’s only two bands now being VOYAGER and NOCTIS, Alex has harnessed his playing and song writing skills to accommodate both styles of music. The latest addition to his bass collection, Alex’s new Mayones Jabba special HH 5 string bass turned out to be one of the best he’s played.
“I came home one day and it was waiting there for me. I had never actually played a Mayones bass before so I was nervous to play it at first. Once I picked up the Jabba and played it was love at first sight! It is seriously one of the best bass guitars I’ve ever played. Both the feel and sound of it is second to none. It looks stunning and it’s the perfect weight; heavy enough to carry huge tone but light enough to wear it for hours on end. I’m already planning for my next Mayones bass!”
Alex will be using his new Mayones Jabba Special HH at Voyager’s debut USA appearance at ProgPower festival in 2011.
