Arran McSporran
To date, De Profundis has performed to thousands of fans across 22 countries, taking part in three international tours and several major music festivals worldwide. The band has had the honour of supporting Iron Maiden, as well co-headlining a festival in front of 30,000.
With two critically-acclaimed full-length albums ("Beyond Redemption" - 2007 - (Self-release/Sony Music) and 2010's "A Bleak Reflection" -2010 - (Kolony Records/Sony Music) under their belt, De Profundis looks set for big things.
The band's unique sound takes influence from not only many of the sub-genres of heavy metal - spanning across death, black, doom and classic heavy metal - but also from progressive rock and jazz.
De Profundis was formed in November 2005, with the band's debut album “Beyond Redemption” being released in August 2007. Six months after playing their first show in September 2007, De Profundis was voted the 6th Best Unsigned Band in the 2007 Terrorizer Readers' Poll.
In February 2009, De Profundis supported Iron Maiden at the Rock in India Festival in Bangalore, India in front of 20,000 people. On the back of this performance, Sony Music gave the band a record deal to release their debut album "Beyond Redemption" in India.
Following the European release of album "A Bleak Reflection" on Kolony Records in February 2010, De Profundis officially launched the new album with a show at the Underworld, London. Later that year the band signed with Relapse Records for exclusive distribution in USA and Canada.
After the success of the band’s first album, Sony Music released “A Bleak Reflection” in India in June 2010. With the support of the British Council, De Profundis returned to India on a headlining tour in October 2010, which included co-headlining Kingfisher’s Octoberfest 2010 in Bangalore in front of 30,000 alongside Lacuna Coil.
In April / May 2011, De Profundis went on a 14-date European tour with Rotting Christ (Greece) and Omnium Gatherum (Finland), performing in 11 countries across Central and Eastern Europe.
Now armed with their custom Mayones instruments, the band is currently working on its third album, due to be recorded in late 2011.
The bass for Arran McSporran, the bass player for De Profundis, is a Caledonious 6 Classic Fretless with custom 35' scale, maple fretliness and regular hardware configuration.
Mayones have always been very prompt and professional in their replies to queries about the instruments and were very open to customisation suggestions. I had been planning my 'ideal' bass for a while and I had a long (maybe excessive!) list of things I would like it to have, including tone chambers, Bartolini pickups, an ash body with ebony fingerboard, figured wood top, a non-traditional body shape, 27 frets, a way to balance the body when stood against something, Willis ramp, active/passive switch, neck-through construction and no markers in the fretboard.
When I browsed the Mayones website and found their Caledonius model had all these things AS STANDARD, I was blown away and simply had to have it!!! The fact the name 'Caledonius' has Scottish connotations was just the icing on the cake for me, as I have some Scottish roots!
When I received the bass I really couldn't believe how much tone and growl the instrument had. It has the most sustain of any instrument I've heard, and the low-B (which I sometimes drop to A) just rings forever! Across the full 6-string range the volume is incredibly consistent, like I'd never experienced on any other bass. I played a clinic two days after I received my Caledonius and it cut through the live mix like a knife!
I am incredibly happy with this bass and look forward to a long and successful relationship with Mayones.
